McCain Gambling That Sarah Palin Will Pull Hillary Clinton Votes
Barack Obama went slightly out of the box when he chose Joe Biden to be his running mate. That choice, however, appears safe when compared to the choice of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
McCain chose Sarah Palin, the Governor of Alaska to be his running mate. He is gambling that Palin could pick up many of the 18 million Hillary Clinton supporters for the upcoming election.
The choice of Palin is somewhat stunning. She was not considered to be on the short list of candidates, but the Democratic Convention this week might have influenced McCain's decision.
The Republicans were hoping that the Democratic Party could not unite after a tough primary battle between Clinton and Obama. They did, however, appear unified this week, and that may have caused a red flag to appear for McCain.
In choosing Palin, he picks someone with less experience than Obama in politics. That basically neutralizes his argument that Obama is not experienced enough to lead the country.
The choice of Palin looks good on the surface for picking up women voters, but to dig a little deeper is to find that Palin actually has vastly different stances than Clinton.
In the end, it will come down to whether McCain's gamble was a good one. If Clinton supporters are committed to the stances that Clinton represented, then Obama should receive most of their votes. On the other hand, however, if they were simply voting for Clinton because she is a women, then McCain stands to prosper from the Palin pick.
