Michigan Representative Joins Frank Online Gambling Bill

It seems as though the support to bring legalized Internet gambling to the US is growing by the day. Representative Barney Frank picked up another supporter for his online gambling Bill on Wednesday.

Representative John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, has now been added as a co-sponsor for the Internet gambling legislation. Conyers' addition means that Frank has now secured forty-nine co-sponsors to date.

"Politicians are really being forced by the people they represent to get behind this legislation," said observer Lenny Gray, "online poker players want their freedom to play without government interference, and they are starting to contact their representatives with that request."

Politically speaking, it is a good time for lawmakers to back Internet gambling. People throughout the US are not happy with the current online gambling laws, and with re-elections always a concern, the politicians are backed into a corner on this issue.

Rep. Frank has two pieces of legislation currently under review regarding Internet gambling. The first one would set the framework for legalization and regulation of Internet gambling, while the second would try to delay the rules from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act from taking effect in December.

This is Frank's second go around at trying to overturn the UIGEA. His first attempt was unsuccessful, but he believes this time he has a better chance with the Democrats controlling both the House and the Senate.

Senator Robert Menendez, from New Jersey, is introducing similar legislation for legalized online gambling in the Senate. The Senate Bill may actually move quicker than the House Bill. If both are approved, they would simply have to be ratified so that both chambers agree on the details.
