Michigan's PowerPick Lottery Club Under Investigation
A state-wide lottery club in Michigan is being charged with a two-count complaint stemming from accusations they pooled lottery tickets among members and resold tickets illegally. According to the AP, Michigan's Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division filed the complaint in Kent County Circuit Court late Tuesday.
The charges were filed against PowerPick Players Club of Michigan, a Grand Rapids-based club which is accused of violating state lottery and consumer laws. The company has been openly promoting their services and club memberships since 2002.
The strategy for PowerPick and its members is simple, pool money togethor and buy large blocks of lottery tickets using number combinations generated from specialized computer software. The software analyzes past drawings and uses statistical probablilities to predict future number drawings.
Powerpick operates their club by charging membership dues and offering 'shares' of the pool. If the pool you're in (typically pools are 25-40 people across the state) gets a winning ticket, the money is divided amongst the players in the pool. According to PowerPick's Web site, when players join, they are assigned a space in pools of 25 or 50 people, with whom they share tickets and winnings.
With charges filed on Tuesday, lottery officials are seeking an immediate shutdown of the club. The power of pooling presents a major advantage for members of the club, and according to state lottery workers, "it creates an unfair advantage for certain percentages of the population."
You can visit PowerPicks website at http://www.powerpick.com/mi/started.aspx for more information. They have several different membership packages to choose from depending on your budget and choice of game.
