Mob Underboss Arrested on Gambling Charges in New England

Big Cheese In a story with details that sound like a movie that may have been produced by famous director Martin Scorsese, an alleged Mafia underboss, nicknamed 'The Big Cheese', was arrested on Friday on charges of illegal gambling, extortion, and conspiracty, according to law officials.

The alleged mob boss, Carmen Salvatore DiNunzio, is forty-nine years old and nicknamed 'The Big Cheese' because he runs a cheese shop in Boston's North End. The story goes that DiNunzio worked hard to rise through the ranks of the mob to finally reach status as a mob under-boss. He was indicted by an Essex County grand jury on Friday on charges of extortion, conspiracy, and organizing a gambling operation.

The investigation of DiNunzio was said to have stemmed from another investigation involving William Angelesco who was acquitted in 2001 of slaying a strip club manager outside of the manager's club.

In another case an officer testified in federal court that Arthur Gianelli, a Lynnfield bookmaker and brother-in-law of former FBI agent John Connolly Jr., was paying DiNunzio $2,000 a month for permission to operate his gambling business. Gianelli is facing trial on federal racketeering charges.

'The Big Cheese' is being held on $250,000 bail at the state police barracks in Danvers pending his arraignment on Monday in Salem Superior Court. He faces charges that, if convicted, could put him away for up to 15 years in prison.
