Motion Filed To Stop Gambling At Seneca Casino In New York
At the end of last week, the state of New York said that they would not stop sending inspectors to the Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino. The move stunned lawyers who claim the decision of U.S. District Judge William Skretny was that the casino was operating illegally.
Now, those lawyers have filed a motion late Monday afternoon that asks the judge to enforce last week's ruling and close down the casino. they feel the casino is operating illegally and should not be allowed to remain open.
"We've been advised by our attorneys that we'd like to play the hand a little close to our chest," said casino opponent Joel Rose. "We expect to get it (the casino) closed."
The Seneca's and the state of New York, on the other hand, are making no rush to judgement to try and interpret the decision as of yet.
"The Nation thanks Governor Paterson and the lawyers of the state wagering board for their support of the Nation's interpretation of the federal court ruling. The court's decision included no order to cease casino operations so the Nation is, in fact, meeting the requirements of that decision," said Maurice A. John Sr., President of the Seneca tribe.
The Nation has gone about its business as usual. They have sent New York State a previously scheduled payment of $57.4 million for the state's percentage of slot revenue under a compact that was signed back in 2002.
