New Jersey Casinos Ordered to Close Wednesday

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

The New Jersey Casino Control Commission has ordered Atlantic City casinos to halt operations Wednesday morning unless the state budget crisis ends.

Linda Kassekert, the commission chairwoman, issued the order Sunday afternoon, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. About 40,000 employees at the 12 casinos would be affected immediately, along with drivers for the bus companies that bring gamblers to Atlantic City. The jobs of thousands more working in casino hotels, restaurants and parking garages could be threatened if the shutdown of gambling operations persists.

The casinos have asked a state appeals court to rule that the inspectors who work for the commission are essential state employees. That could also avert a shutdown. Closing the casinos could also be expensive for the state, depriving it of tax revenues at the same time as casino employees are applying for unemployment benefits.
