California continues to be one of the most liberal states in the nation, but that does not mean their laws change overnight. That is the message that prop 19 supporters are spreading after the results indicate a loss for the legalization of marijuana.

Prop 19 was defeated by a large turnout among older voters. Supporters of prop 19 believe that this was the first step in the legalization of marijuana, and they have asserted that it will not just be California that votes on the issue in 2012.

"We may have lost the battle today, but we are still well alive in the war," said Bryan Bellsten. "We (prop 19 supporters) have brought the issue of marijuana legalization to its highest level ever, and there are groups in other states that will follow our lead. I think we'll see these types of ballot questions in several states in the next election."

Yesterday, CGW outlined how the marijuana issue parallels the gambling issue. At first, many states were against gambling expansion, but with persistence, the lawmakers and pro-gambling groups have created expansion in dozens of US states in the past couple of years. Bellsten believes persistence will also pay off for marijuana supporters.

There was some good news for liberals in California. Nancy Pelosi retained her seat in the House, despite losing the majority leader status when Republicans won control of the chamber. Pelosi has been noncommittal on the online gambling issue in the US, and it is likely that a new minority leader will be chosen when control changes early next year.

Pelosi had low approval ratings, but the district in which she represents is one of the most liberal in the country. The soon to be former House Speaker won in a landslide in the race for her House seat. Republicans have been unhappy with Pelosi and her agenda in the House since the Obama Administration has taken control last year.
