Nevada Backing Off Gambling Age Change For Casinos

The state of Nevada is not used to being in this position. They have always been able to survive and even prosper in tough economic times. This time, they are sinking with the rest of the ship.

In recent days lawmakers in Nevada have been discussing different ways that they can help their casinos. One of the options they have come up with is lowering the gambling age from twenty one to eighteen. Earlier in the week that looked like a viable option.

Now, that option appears to be dead. Top Democrats in the Legislature have come out against the age limit change and many also believe that the Republican governor, Jim Gibbons, would be against the idea.

"It would be in the best interest for Nevada to change their gambling age to eighteen. Competition is getting stiffer for casinos with the expansion around the country, and an age limit change would help. I don't however, see lawmakers approving that sort of radical change," said Tom Lysben, a gaming analyst.

The argument is one similar to the one that comes up when thinking about the drinking age. People believe that if a person can go serve in a war, then they should be able to drink a beer or gamble. Lawmakers have been slow to come around to this frame of mind.

With expansion around the country, there are currently fifteen states that allow gambling at the age of eighteen. That is in addition to various Indian casinos where eighteen is the legal age.
