New Hampshire House Votes On Gambling Legislation Wednesday
New Hampshire lawmakers are facing a difficult decision in the near future. With Massachusetts set to expand their gambling options, New Hampshire is left to do the same, or risk losing valuable money to their neighboring state.
Legislators have been debating casino gambling expansion for several months. The Senate has already passed a bill that would bring slots to six locations in the state. The House will vote on that legislation on Wednesday.
"While it does not appear likely that the House will vote in favor of the Senate bill, it is clear that some form of casino gambling could soon be coming to New Hampshire," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Either way, the vote on Wednesday will be closer than some predict."
The lawmakers that are holding out on the Senate bill have been offered an alternative plan from House leaders. The new plan would cut down the number of locations where slots could be in operation. The alternative also calls for less machines in the state than the Senate plan.
If the Senate proposal is shot down by the House, there is a strong chance that the issue will not be dead. With several weeks left in the legislative session, and massive budget shortcomings, lawmakers will likely attempt to find common ground.
Slot gambling could potentially bring in millions of dollars to help with the state budget. Many states in the Northeast have expanded their gambling laws, and that has put pressure on states such as Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire to keep up.
