New Jersey Authorities Continue Sports Gambling Raids
There are two major times of the year for law enforcement officials to conduct raids on illegal sports betting operations. The first comes in the weeks before and the weeks after the Super Bowl. The other is during the NCAA college basketball tournament.
Police in Trenton, New Jersey, carried out that plan this year. First, they raided the Q & M Deli on South Cook Avenue. More recently, authorities raided Rossy's supermarket at 111 Martin Luther King Boulevard.
The February 8th raid netted two arrests. Police also seized $13,500 in cash, a computer, and a ticket printing machine. In addition, police confiscated drug packaging materials. Two people were arrested in the Super Bowl bust.
On March 19th, the college basketball raid took place. Much like the earlier raid, drug material was found at Rossy's. A computer, handguns, a flat screen television, a 2003 Hummer, and $5,000 in cash were seized.
Store owner Martin Jaquez was arrested and faces gambling charges. Jaquez, however, was not charged with possession of the guns because he had licenses for all three of the firearms.
