The state of New Jersey used to rely heavily on their casino gambling industry. Lately, however, Atlantic City casinos have been struggling to keep from closing thanks to a failing US economy.

There may be hope on the horizon for the casinos in the city. The governor of New Jersey, Jon Corzine, has joined the battle to bring legalized sports gambling to the state. The move is a reaction to Delaware, which recently legalized sports betting.

"Delaware's entry into sports wagering and table games is a serious threat to both the casino and horse racing industries in New Jersey," said Corzine, "We must do everything in our power to stay competitive. We simply cannot afford to sit back and let neighboring states press an unfair advantage against us anytime, and certainly not in the midst of this global economic crisis.

New Jersey is in the middle of a legal battle to try and overturn a federal law that prohibits sports betting in all but four states. Delaware, Oregon, Nevada, and Montana are all exempt from the law.

The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association is at the forefront of the lawsuit, as they are with many gambling related issues in the US. The pro-gambling group is contending that the 1992 law that prohibits sports betting in most states is constitutional.

iMEGA is joined in their lawsuit by the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey, the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association, State Senator Raymond Lesniak, and the Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association of New Jersey. Corzine has now joined that group.
