New Jersey and California are in a race to see which state could regulate online gambling first. On Wednesday, New Jersey took the lead after a California bill proposal to regulate online poker was withdrawn.
In a stunning turn of events, the same lobbying groups that first supported the bill proposed by Senator Roderick Wright, changed their opinions and used their power to have the bill fall short. Card clubs and Indian tribes with gaming interests both denounced the bill in recent months.
Wright proposed legislation that would have taxed online poker. Companies would have paid the state millions of dollars in tax revenue if the plan had been approved. The card clubs and the tribes wanted the rights to offer the online gambling, and that was not guaranteed in the bill.
Wright decided that instead of moving forward towards a vote on the legislation, the senator would withdraw the current bill and rework legislation that had a better chance of passage. The split between supporters and the opposition became apparent to Wright, and the last thing he wanted was a greater divide.
"This bill still needs a great deal of work. For every issue, there were people who liked it and people who hated it," said Senator Wright, to the Senate Governmental Organizational Committee. Although the bill was then withdrawn, Wright vowed to continue to push for the rights of California residents.
In New Jersey, a similar bill has been proposed, and with New Jersey already a major gambling state, the chances of passage seem much higher than in California. New Jersey is also considering adding sports books at their casinos in Atlantic City.
