New US Gambling Law Would Be Nearly Impossible to Enforce

Enforcement of a potential new law that would ban most forms of Internet gambling could be difficult if not impossible at the local level.

U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis, R-Cecilia, was one of 317 in the House this week who voted for the amendment to ban online gambling. The bill still has to be approved by the Senate and signed by President Bush to become law.

There's really no way for local law enforcement to make arrests under such a ban, said Detective Tim Ausbrooks of the Warren County Sheriff's Department.

The only way charges could be brought would be to walk into a residence on another call and find someone gambling online, he said. But Internet crimes in general are difficult to investigate.

The goal of the bill is to clarify existing legislation that already makes most forms of online gambling illegal, according to Mike Dodge, a spokesman for Lewis. Most of the public doesn't know most of this activity is illegal.

The detective also pointed out that most of its detectives work on finding child pornography and there is really no other staff that could work on internet gambling, which they consider to be of much less importance.
