New York Gambino Family Takes A Hit With Guilty Gambling Pleas
Organized crime and gambling go hand in hand. Another thing that goes along with both of those two is jail time. That is the reality that two of the Gambino crime family members realized on Tuesday.
Douglas Maleton and John Caggiano both pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges of running illegal gambling rings in the Bronx. They both will receive jail time and have to pay forfeitures.
The city could not be more happy with the outcome. There is little that authorities in New York enjoy doing more than taking organized crime members of the streets and putting them behind bars.
"When you take down an organized crime figure, you want to be sure that you take them down and they stay down. And because of the work of District Attorney Morgenthau's office in conjunction with the police department, that has now occurred," said Michael Mansfield of the Business Integrity Commission.
Maleton faces up to a year in prison for his role in the crimes. Caggiano could be in jail for up to four and a half years under the plea agreement. He will also have to pay $176,000 in forfeitures.
The gambling ring is said to have brought in almost $1 million a year, according to the District Attorney.
