NFL Infringes On NASCAR Fan Base, Gambling Profits In Delaware

The NFL showed again this weekend why they are the wicked witch of major sports in the US. NASCAR had a race running at Dover Downs in Delaware, and although NASCAR has no objection to sports gambling, the NFL's paranoia have kept bettors away.

What was supposed to be a coming out party for sports betting in Delaware has turned into another scenario where the NFL has thrown its weight around. The NFL led a legal charge that blocked Delaware from offering single bets on sporting events.

The only gambling that is now allowed under law is that of parlays. A gambler must pick at least three correct games in one bet to be a winner. These bets are known in Las Vegas, the sports gambling capital of the world, as sucker bets.

"In essence, the NFL and the other sports leagues that pursued legal action against Delaware have caused the state to lose revenue and has also prevented NASCAR from possibly growing their fan base," said observer Harvey Hanel.

NASCAR and the tracks the races are run on find it unfortunate that one sports league would wield that much power, but the NFL has paid millions of dollars over the years and has built one of the strongest lobbying groups in the US.

"We're a small state with a small population and we need all the help we can get," said Dover Motorsports President Denis McGlynn, "I think the sports betting could have had the ability to draw new people into NASCAR just to give them some other reason to watch."
