NHL Teams Brings Sports And Gambling Together Through Lottery

The NFL will tell anyone that will listen that they are against gambling on their sport. That does not mean that they are totally against gambling, as shown by their recent allowance for teams to be featured on lottery scratch off tickets.
The NHL is also against gambling on their sport. This week, however, two of their teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, joined the ranks of others who have foregone morality in the hopes of raising revenue from gambling.
The Penguins and the Flyers will both have their logos on Pennsylvania $2 scratch-off lottery tickets. Residents in Pennsylvania will be lured to gambling with the help of their favorite sports teams in the state.
The group that will be benefited by the lottery sales is the same group that has been fighting in most states to keep expanded gambling away, the elderly. All proceeds from the sales of these hockey-themed lottery tickets will go to older residents in Pennsylvania.
The NFL led a legal charge this past year to keep Delaware from offering single game betting. This came at a time when the leagues owners approved allowing individual teams to forge alliances with their states lottery. The Washington Redskins and New York Giants are two teams that have already formed those alliances.
NBA commissioner became the first major sports leader to acknowledge that down the road, gambling on his sport may become a viable option. Stern did not commit to allowing the gambling, but admitted that gambling in the US is expanding at a rate where NBA gambling could become a reality in the future.
