No Video Gambling For Unincorporated Cook County
there was a rally held in Cook County for the addition of jobs through video gambling expansion in the state of Illinois. The rally fell short of succeeding, however, after the Cook County Board voted in favor of a ban on the machines for unincorporated Cook County.
In Illinois, lawmakers have legalized video gambling with the hope that it will pay for $31 billion in construction projects in the state. The lawmakers have left the door open for individual cities and towns to ban the machines.
Much to many of these lawmakers' surprise, there has been many of these towns that have taken advantage of that option. Cook County became the latest location where video gambling will not be legal.
"We've heard a lot about jobs and the little guy," said Commissioner Bridget Gainer, "This is not about the little guy. The little guy was not down in Springfield lobbying for this." Gainer is one of the commissioners who has pushed for the video gambling ban.
The issue is a personal one for Gainer, according to video gambling proponents. They claim that Gainer is protecting the casino interests by keeping the video gambling out. Midwest Gaming and Entertainment, along with Chairman Neil Bluhm, is set to begin construction in March on a new casino.
Bluhm and his Midwest company won the rights to a new casino license in Illinois back in late 2008. Bluhm assured gaming regulators in the state on Tuesday that he would have the funding to start that casino project on time.
