Ohio Casino Opponents File Lawsuit With State Supreme Court
The battle goes on in Ohio between the group that wants casinos brought to the state and the group that does not. The latest chapter was written late this past week when the anti-casino group filed a lawsuit with the state Supreme Court.
The lawsuit contends that some of the people collecting the signatures misrepresented their cause. The group wants the signatures and the petition for a ballot measure to be thrown out as invalid.
"On the address issue alone, there are more than 50,000 (signatures) we think should be knocked out," said Sandy Theis, a worker for MTR Gaming Group. MTR has a vested interest in the future of casino gambling in Ohio.
The company owns a racetrack, Scioto Downs, and Mountaineer Casino in West Virginia. If casinos were to be allowed in Columbus and the other three proposed cities, it could severely hurt the company's business at the track and the casino.
The Ohio Jobs and Growth Plan is pushing for casinos in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo. If the are successful in bringing the measure to the voters in November, it would take a majority vote to make the proposal a reality.
Voters in the state have turned down several gambling proposals on the ballot before. This time, however, there is evidence that people in Ohio would rather give in on the casino issue than have their taxes go up to help balance the state budget.
