The UIGEA has promptly forced legitimate operators to stop offering regulated services to US citizens. As a result of this UIGEA success, only a small handful of trusted sites, and hundreds of corrupt sites, are left to profit off of US citizens who refuse to give up their basic right of freedom on the Internet.
With the help of the UIGEA the US government has also raided a few offshore companies, and they confiscated hundreds of millions of dollars from them, and the headlines everywhere read - "The UIGEA - A Great Success!"
Uh, but, hold on a second - there's a problem - you ready? - it was your money they confiscated!
So, as a result of "the great UIGEA success," millions of poker, casino, and sports betting website visitors have been left unprotected from unscrupulous brands, they have had their money taken from them - not from the unscrupulous brands, but from the US government - they have created an environment with no restrictions for underage gamblers, no resources for problem gamblers, and no gaming regulations on sites that millions of American citizens are playing at right now.
But let's take a look at the bigger picture here - Internet Censorship.
One country comes to mind when the world thinks of Internet Censorship - China. China blocks what the people of their country can and can not view on the Internet. China is a communist country. The UIGEA is the first step for the USA in coming up to par with China's communist policies. Is this the country's policies Americans want to emulate?
Or, is the UK the country the US should emulate?
The UK is the country that puts its citizens desires before its government's moral and political views. The UK was the first major civilized country to legalize and regulate full scale Internet gambling. Across the world they are seen as pioneers for this bold move. They had such a respect for their citizens' freedom that they even allowed betting on sporting events.
As a result, the moralistic values of their society have not been ruined. Instead, and to the world's surprise, many betting scandals were uncovered, help for problem gamblers proliferated, and thousands of new jobs were created - not to mention, the UK obtained millions of dollars in tax revenue from their Gambling Act of 2005. That's right, 2005. The USA is already five years behind the UK.
Since the UK has regulated the industry, many other major nations, like France, Germany, Spain, South Africa, and Canada (to name just a few), have recognized the rights of their citizens and liberalized their policies on Internet gambling in order to protect them. The United States is the only major nation that is lagging behind on this futuristic technology, which serves as a microcosm for the way the world sees the US when it comes to technology in general - lagging behind, and possibly, going in the wrong direction.
So, why do we bring this all up now? Because there is currently a bill being amended in the House Financial Services Committee that will go to a vote on Tuesday. Therefore, this is the absolute most important time for you to call your representatives and urge them to support online gambling regulation in its fullest form.
It is imperative that the House members who are on the fence on this issue hear the voice of the citizens they represent before they vote, because you can be sure that many anti-gambling, religious moralists, who want to dictate your freedom, who support communist policy, will be on the phones and writing letters constantly to their representatives. And US representatives really do consider what their citizens want, the catch is, you have to tell them what you want.
It is imperative that you call your Senate representatives as well, and urge them to support online gambling regulations, because the Bill passing the House is no good if it can't also pass the Senate.

If you'd like ideas on what to say when you call, please read the list below...
1. Hi, can you please tell Representative (name of representative) that I fully support online gambling regulation for poker, casino games, and sports games, and that I think he/she should too.
2. Hi I enjoy playing (whichever game you enjoy playing), and I feel I should be allowed to do with my hard earned money as I please and I suggest (your representative) support the current online gambling legislation if he/she would like to keep my vote.
3. Hi, I believe in freedom within a protected environment, and I just wish that I could play online with the protections the US government can offer me.
4. Hi, I am concerned about problem gambling. I think there are not enough resources for problem gamblers, or underage gamblers, and we need regulations to offer these vulnerable people support.
5. Hi, I feel that even if we can't gain the $50 billion over ten years in taxes the estimates say, we still can earn several billion.
6. Hi, I feel that regulating this industry will create thousands of jobs, and I think it's pretty important in today's economic climate to create new jobs.
7. Hi, I believe that Internet Censorship should be discouraged in all its forms. Internet Censorship and the UIGEA reminds me of China's communist policies, and it scares me greatly to think we are becoming more like China, than the UK, or other free nations.
Remember to be courteous and respectful. Acknowledge the hard work the representative has put in for you the past two years. Be sure to thank the person you are speaking with for hearing you out.
