Online Gambling Operations May Relocate To Tasmania

Tasmania has basically opened its arms for online gambling operations from around the world. Tasmania has dropped their tax on bookmaking operations, and the decision may mean financial ruin for the the rest of Australia.

Instead of charging taxes, Tasmania has decided to charge a fee of $250,000 for licensing. This low fee will surely attract some of the biggest gaming operators in the world, with many already looking into relocating their home base for operations.

"This move by Tasmania is going to have a worldwide effect on the future of online gambling," said Online Gaming Analyst Roger Wheeler, "For the rest of Australia, it could end up in disaster, because Tasmania is undercutting all of their laws regarding online gambling."

Recently, William Hill and Ladbrokes relocated their online gambling operations' base from the UK to Gibraltar. The move was done to save money, with the UK charging a thirteen percent tax and Gibraltar only charging one and a half percent.

Tasmanian government officials believe that allowing the online gaming operations to move into the state, there will be a spike in employment opportunities. Even with the jobs that are created, not all are sold on the new law.

Sydney is the current location of many of the biggest online gaming operators in Australia, but that may soon change. The low up front fee could entice many of these operations to relocate, causing a shortage of jobs in Sydney.
