Online Poker Moves One Step Closer To Acknowledgement of Legalization
Representative Barney Frank has spent much of his time and effort trying to get the American government to clarify the ill advised Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. On Tuesday, it turned out his time was well spent.
Frank had his proposed Bill, HR 6870, the Payments System Protection Act, pass a vote from the House Financial Services Committee. It was the first Bill that Frank has proposed to pass the Committee.
The Bill's main purpose would be to provide financial institutions a list of what is or is not legal under the UIGEA. It would also suspend any regulations of the UIGEA.
The ultimate goal of Frank is to give Americans back their right to chose how they spend their leisure time. Frank believes that the government should not be interfering with how people would like to use this time.
During the marking up phase of today's hearing, Representative William Lacy Clay lashed out at the professional sports leagues, saying, "I'm alarmed that major league sports would come forward to announce their opposition to the Bill. I'm puzzled by their stance especially when you have legal sports books in Las Vegas. I can't figure out what the difference is between Internet gambling and Las Vegas sports books is."
