Pennsylvania Lawmakers Costing State Revenue With Gambling Delay

The state of Pennsylvania has made it clear to states around the Northeast that it wants to become the casino gambling capital in the area. That became obvious earlier this year when lawmakers wrote table game gambling into their new budget.

Up until now, however, the lawmakers have stalled in completing the law that would bring table games to Pennsylvania casinos. The deal is costing the state millions in potential tax revenue from the table games.

Christmas is less than one month away, but some lawmakers insist there is still a chance that legislation could be passed before then. In order for that to happen, the lawmakers need to iron out the details of the legislation.

"They (lawmakers) keep saying that they are moving on this issue and that it will be resolved soon," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins, "But they have been saying that since they wrote the estimated table game gambling revenue into the budget back in October, so the people of Pennsylvania are becoming skeptical."

At this point, lawmakers have no choice but to come up with a finalized law. They have written $200 million from casino table games into the budget, and they cannot afford to leave those funds on the table.

Pennsylvania has been one of the most proactive states in the country under Governor Ed Rendell when it has come to casino gambling expansion. A new casinos has opened in Pittsburgh, with another in Philadelphia on the way.
