Governor Ed Rendell made it very clear last week that lawmakers in the state of Pennsylvania are running out of time when it comes to table game legislation. It appears after months of pleading with legislators, Rendell may finally get his wish.
As the Christmas holiday approaches, lawmakers have moved closer to a resolution involving the table game laws. The major hold up was a new casino resort license that some lawmakers had been pushing for. Others did not want the new license for the state.
On Wednesday, it appeared as though the differences had been worked out. The new license would be added to the state's existing casinos, but it would not happen until 2017. That would give the state time to assess the table game gambling after the new law is in place.
The state has already written the revenue from the table games into the new state budget. That has put pressure on lawmakers to create a law that would make table games legal at casinos. Up until Wednesday, the new license had been a sticking point that legislators could not work through.
Rendell began playing hardball with the lawmakers last week when he threatened that without the revenue from the table games, the governor would have to cut 1,000 state jobs. The last threat seems to have been the most effective, with legislators moving towards a resolution.
There will be no vote on the issue until after the new year. The House and Senate are set to gather again at the state capitol on January 5th. A vote should come shortly after that.
Table game revenue is expected to top $250 million for the state. It is money that will be used for state universities, and the table games will also help Pennsylvania casinos compete with Atlantic City to become the gambling capital of the Northeast.
