PETA Throws Gambling Allegations At Mike Tyson Reality Show
Animal Planet is airing a reality show, Take on Tyson, in which Tyson's fascination with raising pigeons is examined. The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is alleging that the show is in violation of gambling laws in New York.
New York law states that no profits can be made from animal racing. Animal Planet executives have gone on record as saying that there was no gambling involved with the part of the show when Tyson races his pigeons against other New York pigeon owners' birds.
PETA, however, has taken the position that because Tyson is being paid for doing the show, he is profiting from gambling on the pigeons. It is a far-fetched accusation, but one that is being investigated by the District Attorney in Brooklyn.
Tyson has made headlines in recent weeks with the announcement of his new reality show. The former boxing champion has long had a well-chronicled fascination with pigeons. In the show, Tyson shows how he is raising and caring for the birds.
PETA is active in seeking out and exposing any individuals who are neglecting or abusing animals. One of their biggest spokespeople is Pam Anderson, and other celebrities have joined PETA in their efforts.
TMZ has reported the accusations of the reality show, and now it will be up to the state of New York whether or not to pursue the issue. PETA began the process by sending a letter to the District Attorney.
