Poker Gambling No More, Police Arrest 33 In Tennessee Raid
Home poker games. They are a lot of fun, but they are also illegal in most states. A couple and their clients found that out after police raided a Shelbyville, Tennessee building and arrested thirty three people.
Authorities claim that the illegal poker game had been going on for about a year. The home game drew large crowds, and the money they were playing for was not pennies.
Police raided the building where there were many people playing poker. Around $48,000 in cash was found during the raid, in addition to guns and pills.
The way the operation worked was people would buy into the game with anywhere from $200 to $1,000. The money paid would get the people into the game and also give them access to a buffet.
"A Tuesday night poker game, that's a very large amount of money ($48,000). From our previous surveillance, we'd seen upwards of fifty people attending these poker games," said Shelbyville Police Detective Brian Crews.
Of the people playing inside at the time of the raid, some of them had previous felony convictions for drug offenses and violent crimes, according to Crews.
Husband and wife James and Christina Tucker are thought to be the masterminds behind the game. They were both arrested by police in the raid.
