Poland Online Gambling Laws May Ruffle Feathers Of European Union
There was a major scandal in the Polish government involving gambling, and now government officials are looking to destroy any future scandals by destroying the gambling industry in the country. New laws are already being discussed within the government.
If the new laws that are being discussed go into effect, they would have a major impact on Internet gambling in the country. Outside operators would no longer be allowed, by law, to target Polish customers.
The European Union, which Poland is a member nation of, would almost certainly oppose these new laws. Many EU nations have licensed online gambling operators that would lose a large portion of business if they were unable to continue to operate in Poland.
Many countries have gone the other way regarding their Internet gambling laws. Countries such as France, Italy, and Spain have started to comply with EU law and have changed their online gambling laws. If Poland were to buck that trend, the European Commission would be prepared to step in.
The Commission has already warned the US about their existing Internet gambling laws. The Commission has given the US a grace period to correct their flawed laws. If the US does not come into compliance with EU trade agreements, then the Commission would take their case to the World Trade Organization.
The corruption in Poland took place surrounding a proposed Bill that would have raised the taxes for gambling operators. Four major politicians were forced from office when it was revealed that they deliberately tried to block the legislation because of their ties within the gambling industry.
