Political Leaders Line Up Behind Casino Resorts In Massachusetts
Governor Duval Patrick is closer than ever to realizing his pledge to the people in his state when he ran for office. The governor now has two important allies in the fight to bring casino resorts to the state.
House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray both said on Friday that they will be supporting casino resorts in Massachusetts. It is a change of direction for DeLeo, who was in favor of slot gambling at state racetracks.
"Given the importance of economic development as well as the vital need for revenue, I have expanded my thinking," said DeLeo on Friday morning, "In addition to my backing of slots, I now support resort casinos."
As for Murray, she has always supported expanded gambling in the state, but up until Friday there was no concrete evidence as to which form she favored. Murray also believes that the revenue that could be generated from casino resorts may be too big to pass up.
"The reality is that hundreds of millions of dollars are going to Connecticut casinos from Massachusetts residents every year," said Murray, "We need to explore ways how we can capture that revenue."
Other politicians in the state are also lining up behind the casino resort idea. For some, the thought of lowering the unemployment rate of 9.1 in Massachusetts was the top reason to support casino gambling. Lawmakers who once opposed the notion of casino resorts, are now softening their stance.
"There is just too much gambling money leaving the state and these politicians understand that the revenue generated from casinos could be substantial," said CGW Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "It is becoming clear that without the gaming revenue, the state will continue to struggle to balance their budget."
