Problem Gamblers Will Not Be Thwarted by Internet Gambling Ban
Congress passed the Internet Gambling Prohibition Bill in an attempt to save problem gamblers from themselves. However, "what this bill does not do is actually help anybody that has a problem with gambling on the Internet..." said Keith Whyte, executive director of National Council on Problem Gambling.
The legislation that Senator Bill Frist snuck onto the Port Security Bill literally in the twelvth hour does nothing to actually stop gamblers who may have a gambling addiction problem. The law bans banks and other processors from allowing transactions to be made from US citizens.
"If the gambling sites do shut down, compulsive gamblers, like other addicts, will seek out a new way to gamble, even if it means doing something illegal," said Coleen Moore, resource development coordinator at Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery.
Mike Osbourne, executive director at Harbour Pointe, a center for gambling addiction in Baltimore said, "Short of physically shutting down the sites, you're not going to stop people from gambling offshore." Osbourne lost more than $3 million before seeking help for his own gambling addiction. "I guess the bookies will be back in business," he added.
