Proposition A Ads Focus On Positive Aspects, Not The Gambling

Trying to bring the reality to voters in Missouri, new ads in support of Proposition A in Missouri are focusing on what it would do for the state's economy and school system. That is a change from critics who are resorting to attacking the gambling aspect of the Proposition.

Anti-gambling groups will go to many lengths to fight against gambling issues even if the end result is that an individual state receives much needed financial help from the gambling. That is the case in Missouri, where the argument over the gambling aspect of Proposition A has overshadowed the true intent of the Proposition.

The proposal in its simplest form is that casinos would no longer have loss limits on their casino floors. They would be taxed at a higher rate, and licensing of new casinos would actually decrease.

Opponents of the proposal have argued that this is just another way for the casinos to get richer and make more money. That argument is true, but the state would make more money along with the casinos.

"It is ridiculous that these groups are focusing on the greed of the casinos, when the Proposition is clearly aimed at helping us all keep our taxes down. people are gambling anyway, I don't see how this hurts people anymore than they are already being hurt," said Joe Lyons, a handyman from Kansas City.

Experts have also agreed that the focus of this particular Proposition for voters should be the end result, not the rhetoric both sides are throwing back and forth.

"When you see an issue like this come up, it is common that the anti-gambling groups attack it using the traditional arguments against gambling. The proponents will say how much help this will give to the community," said Mary Trailor, a political analyst from St. Louis, Missouri.

"The key," Trailor says, "is for voters to sift through the normal rhetoric and find whether the Proposition truly is aimed at helping the state. In this case, I believe that Proposition A is a good thing for Missouri."

Voters will ultimately decide the fate of Proposition A, and for just a few more days, they will have to continue to hear the ads both for, and against, the proposal.
