Rendell 'stunned' as state GOP halts property tax vote
Gov. Ed Rendell said Thursday he believed there were enough House votes to pass a bill to distribute $1 billion in property tax cuts and it "boggles the mind" that the GOP majority would block a vote on the plan.
In a telephone conference call with reporters, Rendell said his staff had counted 88 Democrats and more than 20 Republicans willing to pass the legislation ? a majority even if all 203 House members were present ? and send it on to the governor. Rendell?s comments came one day after House Republicans refused to allow a vote on the legislation, which had passed the Senate with strong majority support Tuesday.
The House then adjourned until an unspecified date after the May 16 primary election.Mercer County?s two Republican lawmakers were among those who didn?t want to see the proposal come to a vote.
