Representative Barney Frank is already finding that the road to Internet gambling legalization in the US may be easier this time around. On Friday, four new co-sponsors signed on to back the new Bill, bringing the total to thirty.

Last year, Frank attempted to have the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act overturned. At the time, Congress was controlled by Republican Conservatives, and the Bill failed. This time, Frank believes the shift of power in Congress may help his chances of succeeding.

The latest representatives to be added were Rep. Steve Driehaus of Ohio, Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado, Rep. Raul M. Grijalva of Arizona, and Rep. Steve Israel of New York. The list has continued to grow since first being introduced in the beginning of May.

Frank may have more people rooting for him to succeed than just residents of the US. The European Union has conducted their own investigation into the online gambling laws in the US, and have found them to be in violation of foreign trade agreements.

The EU has given the US a grace period to have these laws changed and come into compliance with EU trade agreements. They are hoping the new administration will be more open to change then the previous regime.

President Barack Obama has not said much publicly regarding the issue, but he did have in his platform a desire to keep the Internet free from government intervention. The UIGEA is directly opposite of what President Obama is trying to accomplish.

Obama would also like to mend some relations with foreign countries. This may serve as a way for the president to show that he is serious about repairing those relationships.
