Rep. Maffei From New York Joins Frank Online Gambling Bill
Representative Barney Frank may have a different set of problems to deal with this time around in his attempt to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The issue will not be whether legalization and regulation are needed, but to what extent they are needed.
Late this week, Rep. Frank received more support for his online gambling bill when Rep. Daniel B. Maffei joined the bill as a co-sponsor. It was the fifty-first co-sponsor for the bill, which seems to be gaining support by the day.
Maffei is a Democrat from New York that represents the 25th Congressional District of New York. His jurisdiction stretches from Onondaga County and Syracuse, through Central New York, and up to Monroe County.
"Representative Frank has received major support from both New York and California in his efforts to change Internet gambling laws," said observer Mike Ralley, "already, there are thirteen co-sponsors from New York and five from California."
California has already began their push towards legal online gambling. Lawmakers in the state are considering legalizing online poker, opening the door for millions of dollars in revenue for the state.
New York has recently been expanding their land-based casino gambling options. They are attempting to bring a casino to their Aqueduct racetrack, and they are in a battle with other East Coast states for customers. Governor David A. Patterson has been a proponent of expanded gambling in the state.
