Police in the southern Chinese gambling enclave of Macau have seized more than US$12 million in illegal betting slips for World Cup matches and arrested seven suspects, newspapers reported Sunday.

Police made the arrests during raids on two apartment units Saturday evening, the South China Morning Post reported.

The Ming Pao Daily News said the illegal gambling operation was run by Hong Kong gangsters, and the seven arrested men included a Hong Kong resident who headed up the operation and members of the syndicate from Macau and mainland China.

It wasn't immediately clear if they have been charged.

Two to three more Hong Kong suspects are still at large, Ming Pao reported.

A Macau police spokesman said he didn't have immediate information on the case.

In neighboring Hong Kong, police chief Dick Lee on Sunday said local authorities have arrested more than 100 people allegedly involved in illegal soccer gambling since the World Cup started June 9 and have seized about HK$50 million in betting slips.

Hong Kong legalized soccer gambling through the Hong Kong Jockey Club in 2003 in a bid to crack down on illegal betting.
