Governor Robert Riley may be feeling his grasp on the gambling issue in Alabama slipping. In the past couple of weeks, Riley has lost the head of his Task Force on Illegal Gambling to a gambling outing, and now the governor is sending a warning to all parties involved.
"Don't get too close and don't get too close to the families because all of a sudden then everything changes," said Riley, as reported by WSFA12. The threat, however, was not explained by Riley, but it may have something to do with the recent developments in the state.
Governor Riley had his head of the Task Force resign last Friday after it was learned that David Barber won a jackpot at a casino in Mississippi. Barber sent a letter of resignation to Riley, which the governor accepted.
Late this past week, Victoryland's Milton McGregor admitted that he had hired a private investigator to track Barber. There are also reports that McGregor sent a letter to Riley suggesting that he disclose the information of Barber's gambling before January 15th, or else McGregor would go public with the information.
The resignation announcement came on January 15th, but Riley claims that to be a coincidence. Riley has denied the idea that McGregor wrote him a letter, but did offer the warning. Riley refused to explain the warning, according to WSFA12.
In the time since Barber has resigned, lawmakers have been moving on legislation that would allow for state voters to decide the fate of the electronic bingo machines at the center of this issue. Governor Riley is against these amendments, still claiming that he will rid Alabama of illegal gambling.
