In Alabama, the lines have already been drawn in the sand regarding the gambling issue. On Wednesday, the approval of a new bill by a Senate Judiciary Committee guaranteed that the fight would only become more heated in the weeks to come.
The Committee approved a bill that would stop the raids that have been carried out by the Task Force on Illegal Gambling. The Task Force was set up by Governor Robert Riley, and under the new legislation, he would also lose some of his power.
The bill would take away Riley's right to direct or initiate any criminal or civil court proceedings or investigation. Senator Bobby Singleton of Greensboro is the sponsor of the legislation that appears to have many political supporters.
The Committee voted by a count of seven to three in favor of the bill moving along. The vote was drawn on party lines, and that may continue to be the case as it now moves into the full Senate.
Governor Riley has lost the support of many lawmakers with the way he has handled the gambling situation in the state. Instead of calling on the lawmakers' opinion, Riley has taken it upon himself to define bingo gambling.
That decision to stand alone has caused lawmakers to turn away from Riley. Legislators such as Singleton would have thousands of residents in his district lose employment if the Task Force was to raid the Greenetrack casino.
Already thousands of employees have been misplaced since VictryLand and Country Crossings have temporarily closed their operations.
