Governor Robert Riley has put a lot of time and financial resources into creating his Task Force on Illegal Gambling. While the Task Force continues its assault on the gambling industry in the state, lawmakers will begin discussions on Tuesday that could make the Task Force irrelevant in the future.
The state Senate is expected to begin discussions on Tuesday about proposed legislation that would regulate casinos in Alabama. The discussions will start Tuesday, and lawmakers have already agreed to a three day discussion in legislature next week, as opposed to the customary two days.
There is strong support among politicians to correct the current problems the state is facing with their gambling industry. While many in the state believe the bingo machines in operation are legal, Governor Riley has made the ruling that they are not. The rift has caused escalating pressure to define the bingo machines.
Thousands of people in Alabama are employed by the gambling entertainment centers and the recent closures of two of the biggest destinations have caused people in the state to begin losing their patience with the governor and his Task Force.
To pass the law that would legalize and regulate electronic bingo in ten locations throughout the state, twenty-one out of thirty-five senators would have to approve. That number appears well within the reach of pro-gambling politicians.
Tweaks may have to be made to the current proposal, however. Some lawmakers would like more than ten locations, and although they are pro-gambling, would not vote for the Bill in its current form. Senator Hank Sanders is one of those lawmakers, citing the fact that Greene County already has Greenetrack, and Sanders wants additional options in the county.
