If New Hampshire is going to become the next state to expand their casino gambling industry, it will be because the House changed their long-standing opposition on the issue. The Senate passed a gambling bill earlier this week that is on its way to the House.

The bill would bring slot machines to six different locations. Most of the locations are existing tracks, but one casino each in Coos and Grafton would also be permitted.

Governor John Lynch has voiced his displeasure with the bill, claiming that it goes too far too fast. The governor fears that there is not enough regulation outlined in the proposed law, and that lawmakers should wait on a study commission on gaming issues its last report. The report is due in May.

The first step towards passage in the House will take place on Tuesday when the Local and Regulated Revenues Committee will hold a public hearing on the issue. In order to pass the House, representatives will have to be swayed by the amount of revenue that is possible.

Licensing of the slot facilities would bring in $150 million. After that, legislators estimate that $250 million annually could be coming to the state. It is a large amount of revenue that could go towards balancing the state budget.

Gambling expansion around the US has come at a rapid pace over the past several years. many states have used casino expansion as a way to not only generate revenue, but also create jobs at a time when unemployment continues to rise.
