Senator Jon Kyl Softening Online Gambling Stance

Senator Jon Kyl has been public enemy number one for millions of poker players that have received no protection from the US government when dealing with online poker. Kyl has been one of the most outspoken lawmakers against online gambling regulations.

Now, the issue is coming to the forefront of American politics after the US Department of Justice issued an indictment accusing executives of the largest and most well-known online poker sites in the world of fraud. The indictments have caused PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker, to pull out of the US market.

That has infuriated millions of poker players and they have started to call their representatives in full force over the past couple of weeks. Kyl, undoubtedly, will be feeling the pressure if he has not yet done so, and his website has been updated with a suggestion that the online gambling foe may be open to a change of heart.

"Efforts to carve out an exception for games like poker, which many believe is a game of skill, may be considered later this year," says Senator Kyl's official website. "Until I have the chance to review them, I cannot make a judgement about their merits, but I will consider them carefully as long as they leave in place the broader proscriptions against online betting."

Kyl starts the Internet Gambling section of the website by explaining his reasons for opposing online gambling regulations all of these years. None of the reasons outlined would go away if online poker was regulated, calling into question the motives should Kyl change his stance at this point in time.

"Senator Kyl has made some of the most outlandish statements against online gambling of any senator in the country," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "Now, he is considering compromising his stance. It seems as though the political pressure may be a cause for such a change."

Kyl has always spoken about the inability of websites to properly monitor age limit requirements and the possibility of gambling addiction. The age limit verification is something that online sites now have the ability to monitor, but there is still the possibility of addiction since online poker is gambling.
