Senator Kyl Lies About Internet Gambling Arrests
Senator Jon Kyl has misled the American People when he wrote a column in the National Ledger today regarding the latest arrests in Arizona, which involved gambling.
The Arizona authorities raided four illegal gambling rings centered in Phoenix and operated in three states. This group of street level bookies utilized various methods of placing bets and collecting money, one of which was the ability to use computers to make wagers.
Senator Kyl has used this and various other arrests of bookies across the United States as a marketing tool to lie to the American people. Because these bookies used a computer to place the wagers, he claims the US is clamping down on Internet gambling. However, gambling online at licensed and publicly traded offshore online casinos and poker rooms is not illegal in 39 states in America.
Kyl?s misuse of power to influence the unknowing by subtly saying he is clamping down on Internet gambling is not just appalling, it is morally wrong. Although he may believe that all gambling is wrong, he cannot state that Internet gambling is illegal because he thinks it should be.
Also, state lotteries, horseracing, Indian and land-based casinos are exempt from the UIGEA which Kyl sponsored. This does not give much merit to his argument that gambling is morally wrong.
And as far as Kyl's fight against the Internet gambling community goes, he is completely misguided.
Street bookies have been around for as long as gambling has existed and there will never be a change to that. Online casinos will never put the local bookie out of business. There is a matter of credit extended on the street, which is not offered online. There is also the convenience factor. Anyone can place a bet with the local guy, anyone. Online casinos, without the USA having a say, already have a more rigid policy.
The facts are that one should feel more safety when gambling at a licensed offshore casino than with a local bookie, and Senator Kyl needs to stop treating legitimate offshore businesses as if they are the street criminals that he is clamping down on.
Online, you do not have to deal with threats to your body or livelihood. Online you cannot lose more than can spend. There are no late night meetings in dark alleys to square up money. Gambling at Internet casinos run by legitimate companies is a completely different experience than betting with your neighborhood bookie.
Senator Kyl and his followers have attacked the Internet gambling community and it is time they learn that Americans will not put up with the lies anymore. It is time he leave the quality and well established offshore businesses alone. It is time he starts to leave honest, reality-based individuals alone. It is time he starts to tell the truth to the American people.
