Sore Losers In Alabama Leading To Illegal Gambling Busts
The state of Alabama has quite a legal battle brewing over electronic gambling machines. They are prevalent throughout the state, but the governor claims they are illegal. At the same time, an effort is under way to bring the machines' legality out in the open.
Governor Bob Riley is traveling around the state to proclaim that electronic gambling machines are illegal. There is also many raids taking place where these machines are being operated, and the tips are coming from the most unlikely of sources.
Gamblers are going to locations where they can freely play the electronic machines. Then, when they lose money, they are going to the police and informing the authorities of where the illegal gambling is taking place.
Sgt. Mark Roberts of the Huntsville Police Department has gone on record saying that his department is having success busting these illegal operations largely because of tips they receive from gamblers.
All of the raids are taking place at a time when The Sweet Home Alabama Coalition is pushing for the legalization of these machines. The governor, however, is strongly opposed to any such legislation.
Five years ago the state received a favorable Supreme Court ruling that allowed them to start busting these illegal gambling operations. The problem now for the state is that many of the machines being used do not fall under the slot machine classification.
