Sports Gambling Approved By Delaware Senate
Governor Jack Markell had a plan to legalize sports betting in the state of Delaware. He took his plan to legislators, who revised it and sent it back and forth across the aisle. The end result was the Senate passing the Bill on Tuesday.
Now, all that is left for the Bill to become law and sports betting to become a legal activity in Delaware, is the signature of the man who had the vision in the first place. Governor Markell is expected to sign the Bill before the end of the legislative session.
"I am very pleased that the Senate acted so quickly to pass the sports lottery legislation and I very much appreciate the leadership from both sides of the aisle," said Markell in a statement, "In particular, I want to thank Senator Deluca as the lead Senate sponsor and the leadership in the House of Representatives who came together to get us closer to our meeting budget challenges."
The sports betting Bill does not entitle gamblers the same luxuries they would enjoy if they went to a Las Vegas sportsbook. The new law will only authorize gambling in the form of parlay bets.
That severely turns the odds in the state's favor. Parlay bets are when a bettor takes two or more games on a single wager. In order to win the bet, the gambler has to win all teams that are picked. If one loses, so does the bet.
Sports entities such as the NFL and NCAA have been lobbying against the sports betting in Delaware, but their efforts have come up short. The NFL is planning to ask the courts to stop the Bill from becoming law.
