Illinois Not Changing Stance on Casino Payments
State gambling regulators do not intend to allow payments totaling millions of dollars to resume from an East Chicago casino to a private company even though a judge ruled the contract calling for the payments was valid.
The Indiana Gaming Commission stepped in two weeks ago, saying the local agreement that had steered more than $16 million from casino operators since 1997 to East Chicago Second Century Inc. violated regulations and the intent of state law.
And while a Marion County judge on Wednesday ruled in favor of Second Century in a lawsuit filed against it by current East Chicago officials, the decision does not affect the gaming commission's decision, said Ernest Yelton, the commission's executive director.
