Governor Steve Strickland just saw his state of Ohio vote in favor of casino gambling expansion for the first time in their history. Now he must deal with a growing number of residents in Franklin County that do not want a casino in their backyard.

Voters approved four casinos for Ohio in the November election. The casinos would be built in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo. The Columbus casino, however, is drawing the ire of people in Franklin County.

Ohio Senator David Goodman has sponsored a resolution that would allow the states voters to decide whether Franklin County voters could decide for themselves if they want to ban casinos in their county. The governor, however, believes this route would be too costly, and perhaps, unnecessary.

"I think there may be other approaches that could achieve the desirable result without going that route," said Strickland on Monday. Among those approaches may be discussing the issue with Penn National Gaming, the company building the casino.

Strickland said that time was needed to discuss the possible options, but did not elaborate on what those solutions could be. he did say that he may talk to Penn National and come up with a resolution that everyone involved will be happy with.

Ohio voters had the opportunity several times in the past to legalize casino gambling, but have shot down the idea each time until this past November. Voters finally came around to the idea of the job growth and revenue that the most recent casino plan had to offer.
