Super Bowl Gambling Pool Lands Illinois Bar Owner In Jail
Gambling on the Super Bowl has reached enormous proportions. There is literally thousands of different ways that gamblers can bet on the game. One way that is popular is square pools. Even though these pools are popular, they are still illegal.
Michael Alvarez, whose wife is the owner of Emma's Pub & Cantina, has been charged with running one of these square games out of the bar. He is charged with one count of syndicated gambling, and two counts of keeping a gambling place.
He allegedly charged people $600 a box for the pool. 100 boxes were sold, leaving the total money $60,000. These pools are illegal in most states, and while many law enforcement officials actually take place in these pools, that was not the case for Alvarez.
Bail in his case was set at $100,000. the police were turned on to the gambling pool when they received a complaint. They investigated the complaint, and ended up charging Alvarez with the crime.
This was not the first time that Alvarez has been in trouble with the law involving gambling. he has been arrested before and been convicted. He has served time in jail because of his involvement with illegal gambling.
