Ten Men Arrested In Queens Sports Gambling Operation
Sports gambling is at the top of the list when it comes to organized crime operations that authorities are trying to bust. One of these operations was busted in New York on Monday, with ten men being arrested.
The operation was run out of a Queens "wire room", according to authorities. It was a sports betting operation that has taken in over $30 million in the past five years.
Undercover detectives began their investigation by opening accounts with members of the crime organization. They placed bets between March and November on various sports including the NFL and college football.
The two leaders of the group were brothers. They, and the eight others arrested all plead not guilty in court on Monday. There are still two other men being sought by police in the case.
If convicted, the men could face up to four years in prison. They were charged with promoting gambling and conspiracy. There have been several arrests this year involving sports betting.
While authorities are cracking down on illegal video gambling machines around the country, it is still sports betting that they focus on. In many cases, the sports gambling lead police to organized crime members.
