China has been having a problem with their athletes being involved with match fixing schemes in their sports. This week, three baseball players were sentenced to jail for their role in a 2008 game fixing plan.

In the past, players who have been convicted of match fixing crimes have received probation and monetary settlements. This is the first time that the players have actually received jail time for the offense. It shows that the government is getting serious about ridding its sports from this problem.

"The Chinese government has been embarrassed on numerous occasions in the past several years, and it has become apparent that they are looking to send a message to future athletes that this type of behavior will not be accepted," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins. "With the threat of prison now a real possibility, athletes may think twice before they get involved with these schemes."

The three players that were sentenced this week played for the now defunct Media T-Rex. The players were offered money to participate in throwing several games in 2008. The collaboration with the bookie landed each player to receive up to ten months in prison, handed down by a Taipei district court.

In total, five players were arrested in connection with the gambling scheme, Two of the players received suspended sentences after admitting their guilt. The three that were sentenced yesterday did not cooperate with authorities, with some believing that to be the reason for the jail sentence.

The boss of the team and his assistant were cleared of any wrongdoing in the case. this is just one of several cases in recent years in which players received valuable goods or cash to throw games. Baseball is also just one of the sports where the criminal behavior is taking place.
