Three More Co-Sponsors For Barney Frank Online Gambling Bill

It is not that difficult these days for Representative Barney Frank to get support for his recently proposed online gambling Bill. On Friday, three more representatives added their names to the list of co-sponsors, bringing the current number to fifty-four.

Although the Bill has received much bi-partisan support, the three representatives added on Friday were all Democrats. Representative Betsy Markey from Colorado, Rep. Russ Carnahan, from Missouri, and Rep. Bill Pascrell from New jersey all joined the fight for Internet freedom.

Frank has been contending for years that people in the US should be allowed to legally gamble online. In 2006, a largely Republican Congress created the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The law caught congressional Democrats by surprise as it was attached to a port security Bill.

After having several years to dissect the UIGEA, many lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have come to the realization that the law cannot continue. Rep. Frank previously tried to have the law overturned last year, but he was denied by a Republican Congress once again.

This time around, Frank and the Democrats have control of both the House and the Senate, although even many Republicans believe the law should be overturned. Frank's House Financial Committee is expected to take up his new proposed legislation in the Fall.
