Tribal Casino Opposed in Fort Smith
Hundreds of Fort Smith residents rallied last night to protest a proposed tribal gambling casino at the city's riverfront. The United Keetoowah Band has applied to federal officials to develop ten acres for a 250-room hotel and casino gambling entertainment zone. Fort Smith Mayor Ray Baker told the crowd that he does not want the casino to be built. Baker says gambling will not be the "salvation of Fort Smith's economic prosperity."
The mayor says he'd rather see a different sort of development at the site, maybe a shopping center or a theme park or even a housing development. The Family Council of Arkansas is working to block the gambling casino. The group is appealing a law that enabled electronic games of skill to be installed at race tracks in Hot Springs and West Memphis. The council says it can get that law overturned by the state Supreme Court, that move could block any tribal casinos, too.
