Two Plead Guilty In Multi-State Sports Gambling Ring Case
People in Detroit have been harder than those in other states when it comes to the recent economic woes of the US. That does not, however, give them any more right than others to break the law to try and make money.
On Tuesday, two men pleaded guilty in federal court to charges related to a multi-state illegal sports betting operation. The operation was being run out of a law office in Michigan, and various bars.
Attorney John Steven Shelley and associate David Stronski pleaded guilty to charges of running an illegal sports gambling ring. Officials claim that the ring brought in over $25,000 a week, and police seized over $250,000 while executing search warrants in Michigan and Florida.
Florida has become a hot bed for illegal sports betting operations in the past decade. Each year, authorities send in undercover officers to bars and other sports related businesses to get a handle on the illegal activity. Many times, these undercover investigations lead to arrests.
"Illegal gambling is by no means a victimless crime," said Detroit FBI Special Agent in Charge, Andrew Arena, as reported by the Free Press, "The FBI, with cooperation of our law enforcement partners, is committed to aggressively investigate illegal sports betting and illegal criminal enterprises."
US District Judge John O'Meara will sentence both Shelly and Stronski in Ann Arbor on June 23rd. The US Attorney's Office estimates that hundreds of thousands of dollars in profits were made by the illegal sports betting operators.
