The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created three full years ago, but in is next Tuesday that all concerned parties are keeping an eye on. That is the day the rules for the UIGEA will officially be implemented.

Nineteen lawmakers have made it known that they would like to see a delay in the implementation of these rules. The lawmakers, along with the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the American greyhound Track Operators Association, and the Poker Players Alliance, have sent letters to the US Department of the Treasury, asking for the delay.

The lawmakers believe that more discussion is needed on the issue before the UIGEA officially becomes law. Representative Barney Frank, meanwhile, has two pending pieces of legislation that would forever stop the UIGEA.

Frank is working for the people of the US who clearly want regulated online gambling. Currently, the US is the biggest Internet gambling market in the world, but the country's residents are not protected by the government against unjust operations.

The financial meltdown in the US has caused the House Finance Committee, which Frank Chairs, to focus their efforts for much of the past year on the economy. That has delayed the process of moving the online gambling legislation through Congress.

With a delay in the implementation of the UIGEA rules, Frank and sixty-two co-sponsors for his HR2267 Bill, would have time to attack the issue after the new year.

The clock is ticking, and as of yet there has been no decision made on a delay. D-Day for the online gambling industry comes next Tuesday, unless the Treasury has a change of heart and grants the delay.
